The Lasting Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Adulthood
Childhood sexual abuse can continue to affect relationships, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and everyday life long after the abuse has ended. Understanding these impacts can be an important step towards healing and recovery.
Childhood sexual abuse can affect people in many different ways, both during childhood and throughout adult life.
Many adults live with the effects of abuse for years before seeking support. Some may recognise the connection between past experiences and present-day difficulties, while others may simply notice challenges with relationships, trust, anxiety, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing or a persistent sense that something is not quite right.
The effects of childhood sexual abuse are not always visible and can continue to influence life long after the abuse has ended.
Common experiences following childhood sexual abuse may include:
• Anxiety and chronic stress
• Difficulties trusting others
• Shame or self-blame
• Relationship difficulties
• Hypervigilance and feeling constantly on guard
• Depression
• Problems with self-worth
• Difficulties setting boundaries
• Sleep disturbances
• Complex trauma responses
These responses are often understandable adaptations to experiences that should never have occurred.
While childhood sexual abuse affects people of all genders, many adults carry their experiences in silence for years, and sometimes decades. Feelings of shame, fear of judgement or uncertainty about how to talk about what happened can make seeking support feel difficult.
Therapy provides a safe, respectful and confidential space to explore these experiences at your own pace.
Recovery is not about forgetting what happened. For many people, healing involves understanding the impact of trauma, reducing shame, rebuilding trust, strengthening relationships and developing greater self-compassion.
My professional background includes work within specialist sexual assault services, the Tasmania Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Sex Crime Unit, Laurel House, Victim Assist Queensland and the National Redress Scheme. This experience informs my trauma-focused approach to supporting adults affected by childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault and complex trauma.
Support is available, and healing is possible.
